The proposed project is a multi-year
data collection effort to evaluate the effectiveness of PAVEd for
Success (PAVE), an intervention designed to improve teachersÂ’
vocabulary instructional practices and thereby promote vocabulary
development among kindergarteners in the Delta region of
Mississippi. The children in this region are well behind national
averages in vocabulary skills, and vocabulary knowledge is an
essential component of literacy development that has generally been
difficult to improve. The PAVE program is one vocabulary program
that has shown promise, but more rigorous testing is required to
establish evidence of its effectiveness. The study sample will
include 120-160 teachers, and 1200-1600 kindergarten students in a
randomized control trial in 60-80 schools. Student's literacy
skills and teacher's literacy instruction practices will be
assessed to determine the impact of PAVE on students and
teachers.
