What Children Can Expect
VOICE OVER: Welcome to the Early Childhood Longitudinal
Study, Kindergarten Class of 2023-24, or ECLS-K:2024 for short!
With your help, the study will be able to provide important
information to improve school experiences for all children.
VISUAL: Title card with ECLS illustrations and text animating on
screen
VO: Children in the past have enjoyed the study sessions – let us
tell you a bit more about them.
V: Open on training footage of children entering into the study
setting with an ECLS administrator.
Working With Children: 1:05-1:40
Jacob has six teddy bears.
Each teddy bear has two eyes.
How many eyes are there in all?
VO: With your permission, your child will take part in one-on-one
sessions with a trained ECLS team member.
V: Transition to training footage of child participating in the study
with ECLS team member.
Child Assessment Demo 3rd grade: 1:26-1:37
VO: During these sessions —which happen just five times
between kindergarten and fifth grade—the ECLS team member
will show your child pictures and read them age-appropriate
reading, math, and memory-related questions.
V: Sample question animates on screen. Teddy bear image card
pops into frame followed by a text box with question text.

School
VO:Your child can respond verbally or by pointing to an answer.
Children are only asked to do their best and can skip any
questions that they don’t want to answer. Your child's
performance won't be shared with the school.
V: Back to training footage of child participating with study with
ECLS team member.
Older kids: 1:30-1:40
1 hour
VO: The sessions take place at school, in locations like the
library or a classroom.While activities are untimed, they usually
last about an hour.
V: Transition to white screen. A school illusration animates on
screen to represent the study location. A clock illustration pops on
screen with clock hands revolving to show an hour passing.
REPLACE
VO: The study team will work with your school to make sure the
sessions happen at a convenient time.

Safety first!
VO: Rest assured; your child’s safety comes first.
V: Color fills screen as the words ‘Safety first!’ animate on screen,

VO: Children are welcome to take breaks. Accommodations
are available so selected students, including students with
disabilities, can participate.

Background checks and
training for study staff
VO: That’s why every ECLS team member—many of whom are
retired teachers—undergoes a Federal background check and
training before they are permitted to work with children.
