Student Debriefing Questions

After all students in a session have finished with the assessment, field staff will conduct a debriefing activity with the students. Field staff will ask the debriefing questions out loud to the group of students. The questions may be paraphrased, and additional follow-up questions, such as those indicated in the bulleted lists below, may be asked. Students will respond by raising their hands and by calling out responses, as appropriate. Field staff will use their discretion about whether some or all of the questions will be asked, depending on the amount of prompting the students require, and on the amount of time remaining. The debriefing session should not exceed 10 minutes. Field staff will write down the students’ responses to the questions.

1. Raise your hand if you’ve never used a touch-screen device (such as an iPhone, iPad, or Kindle) before.

[Follow-up questions may include:]

• How many of you use a touch-screen device occasionally?

• How many of you use a touch-screen device frequently or all the time?

• Of those of you who use touch-screen devices, how many of you use a tablet (such as an iPad, Kindle, or the device you used for this assessment)?

2. You used a lot of different equipment during the assessment. Raise your hand if you had trouble working with any of the equipment.

[Follow-up questions may include:]

• Which equipment did you have trouble with? Why/What happened?

• Did you have trouble using the tablet to enter your results/answers? Why/What happened?

• Did you have trouble wearing gloves and then touching the tablet to enter your responses? Why/What happened?

• Did you use the stylus? Was it hard to use the stylus? Why/What happened?

• Did you have enough space to work? Why/What happened?

3. Raise your hand if you had trouble understanding the directions.

[Follow-up questions may include:]

• Which directions did you have trouble understanding?

• Was it clear when to use the tablet and when to use the kit materials on your desk?

4. Is there anything that we can change that would make it easier to take this assessment?
