Protocol for Parent Interviews

(Note: Have initial postcard responses from parent available)

1. What grade is your child/children in? What age is your child? Do you have more than one child participating in the Brain Power! program? What is the gender of each participating child?

2. You responded on the parent postcard that you felt the Brain Power! curriculum was age- appropriate/ was not age-appropriate/was somewhat age-appropriate. Please explain what was or was not age-appropriate for your child and why. If an aspect was somewhat appropriate, please describe as well.

3. You responded on the parent postcard that it was important/was not important/was somewhat important to teach children about the topics presented in the program. Please explain this response.

4. You responded on the parent postcard that you thought the curriculum materials would make you more comfortable/would not make you more comfortable/would make you somewhat more comfortable in talking to your child about drug use and abuse. Why do you feel this way? In other words, what specific aspects of the materials helped foster conversation with your child and/or what aspects made conversation less likely?

5. You responded on the parent postcard that the content in the Brain Power! curriculum was/was not/ was somewhat engaging for your child. What specific aspects did you find most engaging for your child and least engaging? In other words, what aspects of the content appeared most interesting to your child or inspired the most participation? Did your child ever approach you with additional questions about drugs or their effects on the brain after having completed a module in school or after having completed a discussion or activity with you at home? What modules do you think he/she learned the most from?

6. Did you find the suggested discussion points and at-home activities in the parent newsletters easy to understand and do? If you participated in any of the suggested discussions or at-home activities with your child, which ones were most successful and why? Did you find the inclusion of Additional Resources helpful? Did you use any of the additional resources? If so, what websites or publications did you find most and least beneficial to your child?

7. What would you change about the Brain Power! curriculum to make it even more interesting for your child? If you found an aspect inappropriate, how would you change it to better suit your child?

8. What, if anything, were you able to learn from the Brain Power! curriculum as a result of your or your child’s participation?
