The Head Start Impact Study is a longitudinal study that will follow approximately 5,000 three- and four-year old children across 75 nationally representative grantees through first grade. The goals of the study are to determine: 1) how Head Start affects the school readiness of children participating in Head Start as compared to children not enrolled in Head Start; and 2) under which conditions Head Start works best and for which children random assignment is used in the design.
