Abstract: THIS SURVEY RESPONDS TO THE MANDATE IN THE GENERAL EDUCATION PROVISION ACT FOR NCES TO DETERMINE THE DEMAND FOR, AND THE AVAILABILITY OF, QUALIFIED TEACHERS. THE INFORMATION GATHERED IS NEEDED BY CONGRESS, THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH, AND OTHERS WHO AFFECT EDUCATION POLICY AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT. SPECIFIC AREAS OF INQUIRY ARE THE NUMBER OF FILLED AND UNFILLED TEACHER POSITION OPENINGS AND METHODS BY WHICH SHORTAGES MAY BE ALLEVIATED.
