The Highway Safety Act of 1966, 23
U.S.C. § 402, provides the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) funding
to assist federally recognized tribes in implementing traffic
safety projects. These projects are designed to reduce the high
number of traffic crashes and their resulting fatalities, injuries
and property damage within Indian communities. The funding is
intended to supplement an existing traffic safety program on the
reservations. These grants are funded in the form of reimbursements
and each tribe applying for funding must demonstrate a need with
traffic statistics and data. This process is documented by the
regulations set at 23 CFR 1300.
