Noncitrus Fruits and Nuts 2019 Summary (May 2020)
USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service
Noncitrus Fruits Comments
Apple, Commercial: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 10.6 billion pounds, up 8 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage
was estimated at 293,700, up 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 37,500 pounds per acre,
up 2,300 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 7.43 billion pounds were for the fresh market
and 3.20 billion pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $2.75 billion, down 7 percent from the previous
season, with an average annual price of 25.8 cents per pound.
In Washington, excellent quality and quantities of early season varieties more than offset any adverse impact from cold
weather later in the year. Michigan growers reported heavy rain episodes that hampered spraying, resulting in lower
volumes but higher quality fruit. In New York, wet weather during pollination and hail damage early in the season
reduced the size of the crop.
Apricot: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 51,180 tons, up 30 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was estimated at
9,600, down 9 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 5.34 tons per acre, up 1.61 tons from the previous
year. Of the total utilized production, 29,030 tons were for the fresh market and 22,150 tons were for processing. The
value of the crop totaled $51.4 million, up 8 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of
$1,000 per ton.
In California, a big crop fruit set on the trees led to a much larger harvest than last year.
Avocado: Utilized production for the 2019-2020 crop season totaled 134,700 tons, down 27 percent from the previous
year. Bearing acreage was estimated at 52,920, down 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 2.56 tons
per acre, down 0.9 tons from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 133,440 tons were for the fresh market
and 1,260 tons were for processing. The value of the 2019-2020 crop totaled $399 million, down slightly from the
previous season, with an average annual price of $2,960 per ton.
In California, the largest producing State, a heat wave in July 2018 negatively impacted the developing 2019 avocado
crop, resulting in the second lowest California harvest in 10 years. Spring rains in 2019 delayed the start of harvest, which
picked up quickly with good prices reported. In Florida, avocado acres were being replanted since being damaged by
Hurricanes Irma and Michael. Some growers experienced low production due to Laurel Wilt disease, with some smaller
operators reporting they were in the process of removing their diseased trees and replanting. Many growers that managed
to avoid disease reported high yields.
Banana: Beginning in 2018, banana estimates were discontinued.
Blackberry: Beginning in 2018, blackberry estimates were discontinued.
Blueberry, Cultivated: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 673 million pounds, up 21 percent from 2018. Area harvested
was estimated at 102,700 acres, up 15 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 6,630 pounds per acre,
up 330 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 373 million pounds were for the fresh market and
300 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $909 million, up 14 percent from the previous
season, with an average annual price of $1.35 per pound.
Blueberry acreage continued to expand in the Northwest. Oregon’s season was slow to develop, but as the season
progressed record setting yields prevailed. Late season harvest began in mid-August. Washington’s Whatcom County
blueberries were blooming in early May and were ready for harvest by early July. Harvest concluded for
Western Washington and San Juan County in early September. Georgia blueberry growers had their best season since
2016. There were only some isolated reports of frost which allowed a majority of acres to be harvested.

value of the crop totaled $660 million, up 3percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1,890 per
ton.
In California, sufficient chill hours and precipitation set the stage for a good year. Cold weather delayed bloom and
harvest began later than in recent years. In Washington, trees were late to bloom due to the extended amount of time snow
was on the ground, but the crop caught up due to the steady warm spring weather and reported quality remained good
throughout the season.
Cherry, Tart: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 236 million pounds, down 18 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was
estimated at 34,100, down 3 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 7,680 pounds per acre, down

235 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $35.7 million, down 37 percent from the previous
season, with an average annual price of 15.1 cents per pound.
In Michigan, the largest tart cherries producing State, growers reported little to no weather related damage, despite cooler
temperatures slightly delaying crop progress and harvest. In New York, tart cherries crop was adversely affected by a
freeze event, resulting in the lowest production since 2012. In Wisconsin, several orchards were unable to harvest any
crop due to wind and insect damage. Additionally, a cold, and wet spring led to a poor quality crop.
Coffee: Utilized production in Hawaii for 2019-2020 totaled 26.9 million pounds (cherry basis), up 2 percent from 2018.
Bearing acreage was estimated at 6,900, down 3 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 3,952 pounds per
acre, up 107 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $54.3 million, up 8 percent from the previous
season, with an average annual price of $2.02 per pound.
Growers reported that the crop bloomed and set well despite pressure from coffee berry borer and lingering effects of
volcanic activity,
Cranberry: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 7.83 million barrels, down 12 percent from 2018. Area harvested was
estimated at 38,500 acres, down 2 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 205.6 barrels per acre,
down 21.5 barrels from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 270,480 barrels were for the fresh market and
7.56 million barrels were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $225 million, down 9 percent from the previous
season, with an average annual price of $28.70 per barrel.
Wisconsin growers reported the worst year ever for cranberries with weather conditions too cold and wet at the wrong
times of the year. Massachusetts growers also reported a wet, cold spring, but timely summer rainfall and cool September
nights helped to produce good quality berries.
Date: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 61,260 tons, up 53 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was estimated at 15,400,
up 3 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 3.99 tons per acre, up 1.25 tons from the previous year. Of the

Noncitrus Fruits and Nuts 2019 Summary (May 2020)
USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service
In California, there was plenty of moisture and snowmelt which provided a higher moisture content at harvest, resulting in
higher weight for the harvested fruit. In Arizona, there was an increase in both total and bearing acres from 2018. As a
result of the increase in acres and strong reported yields, Arizona set a record high production in 2019.
Fig: Beginning in 2018, fig estimates were discontinued.
Grape: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 6.79 million tons, down 11 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was estimated
at 935,000, down slightly from the previous year. The average yield was 7.35 tons per acre, down 0.76 ton the previous
year. Of the total utilized production, 998,900 tons were for the fresh market and 5.79 million tons were for processing.
The value of the crop totaled $5.72 billion, down 14 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of
$842 per ton.
In California, grape growers were increasingly turning to mechanization. The cold and wet spring delayed bud break up to
two weeks for coastal vineyards. In the Central Valley, the extra rain and warm spring weather caused vines to grow
quickly. However, the extra spring moisture made mildew a bigger than normal concern. For wine grapes, lower demand
following the record 2018 production resulted in significant tonnage going unsold. In Washington, there were several fall
frost events that negatively impacted some during harvest. Yield was impacted for some producers who left some grapes
unpicked due to concerns about frost damage.
Kiwifruit: Utilized production in California for 2019 totaled 51,190 tons, up 35 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was
estimated at 4,400, up 13 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 11.7 tons per acre, up 2 tons from the
previous year. All of the total utilized production was for the fresh market. The value of the crop totaled $86.0 million, up
55 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1,680 per ton.
In California, producers reported a late start to the season. However, it wrapped up with a good-size crop of kiwifruit as a
result of more bearing acres and in response to strong demand.
Nectarine: Utilized production in California for 2019 totaled 131,980 tons, up 10 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage
was estimated at 15,500, up 11 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 8.65 tons per acre, up 0.05 ton from
2018. The value of the crop totaled $129 million, up 24 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of
$980 per ton.
The California nectarine season delivered excellent volumes with good quality reported.
Olive: Utilized production in California for 2019 totaled 164,650 tons, up significantly from 2018. Bearing acreage was
estimated at 37,500, unchanged from the previous year. The average yield was 4.47 tons per acre, up 3.04 tons from the
previous year. All of the total utilized production was for processing. The value of the crop totaled $130 million,
up significantly from the previous season, with an average annual price of $791 per ton.
California growers reported ample heat and water availability which led to good fruit development. There were reports of
some rain during bloom which negatively impacted some olive set, however, overall crop and weather conditions were
significantly better than last year.
Papaya: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 10.6 million pounds, up 3 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was estimated
at 690, down 14 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 17,000 pounds per acre, up 4,000 pounds from the
previous year. The value of the crop totaled $4.94 million, down 13 percent from the previous season, with an average
annual price of 47.0 cents per pound.
The Hawaii crop was severely damaged by the eruption of the Kilauea volcano that began in May 2018 and lasted for
several months. In the Puna District, on the east side of the Big Island where about half of the papaya crop is grown, lava
smothered farms or blocked access to properties at peak harvest time. Many of the trees not covered by lava were
destroyed by the sulfuric oxide gases.

Peach: Utilized production totaled 658,830 tons, up 3 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was estimated at 74,400,
down slightly from the previous year. The average yield was 9.16 tons per acre, up 0.44 ton from the previous year. Of the
total utilized production, 262,760 tons were for the fresh market and 396,070 tons were for processing. The value of the
crop totaled $519 million, up 1 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $788 per ton.
In California, heavy rain and plenty of chilling hours benefited the 2019 Freestone crop. As a result, the trees experienced
a very good bloom. After the bloom, cooler weather resulted in a slight delay in harvest, but overall conditions were
favorable, which benefited color and sizing. California Clingstone full bloom occurred on March 18, a few days later than
last year. Bloom was reported to be good, but colder than normal temperatures resulted in delayed crop development.
In South Carolina, growers reported plenty of early chill hours, abundant water, and trees full of blooms, which led to a
bountiful harvest. Harvest began mid-May and was 78 percent complete by August 5, 2019. Most of Georgia growers
experienced optimal conditions to produce a large crop with plenty of rain at the right times and a cool spring with only
minimal frost damage. In Michigan, peach production was decimated in 2019 because of the polar vortex experienced
during the winter of 2018. Nearly the entire crop was lost in the southwestern growing area.
Pears: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 724,820 tons, down 9 percent from 2019. Bearing acreage was estimated at
45,400, down 2 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 16.1 tons per acre, down 1.3 tons from the previous
year. Of the total utilized production, 523,890 tons were for the fresh market and 200,930 tons were for processing. The
value of the crop totaled $315 million, down 27 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $435
per ton.
Cooler than normal spring in the Northwest caused the season to start later than usual. The hot weather later in the season
contributed to decay and fruit drop resulting in a lighter crop than forecasted. In California, producers pruned the crop
aggressively in hopes for better quality and sizing. The season started later than normal due to a cool spring, but the
weather after that was generally favorable.
Plum: Utilized production in California for 2019 totaled 97,850 tons, down 8 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was
estimated at 15,000, unchanged from the previous year. The average yield was 6.77 tons per acre, down 0.39 tons from
the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $116 million, up 16 percent from the previous season, with an average
annual price of $1,180 per ton.
A cooler than normal spring caused the season to start about a week later than usual, but the weather after that was
generally favorable for the crop.
Prune: Utilized production in California for 2019 totaled 90,190 tons, up 2 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was
estimated at 44,000, unchanged from the previous year. The average yield was 2.07 tons per acre, up 0.07 ton from the
previous year. The value of the crop totaled $136 million, down 19 percent from the previous season, with an average
annual price of $1,510 per ton.
Weather conditions were good during the bloom, but warmer than normal temperatures resulted in smaller fruit. Growers
reported that processors were reluctant to accept the smaller fruit.
Raspberry: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 226 million pounds, up 4 percent from 2018. Harvested acres were
estimated at 16,700, down 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 13,500 pounds per acre, up
600 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 131 million pounds were for the fresh market and
94.4 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $432 million, up 18 percent from the previous
season, with an average annual price of $1.91 per pound.
Washington raspberries excelled under favorable conditions during the spring months and, began to bear fruit in early
June. The crop harvest began in mid-June and continued through mid-August.
Strawberry: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 22.5 million cwt, down 13 percent for comparable States from the
revised 2018 crop estimates. Area harvested was estimated at 44,800 acres, down 1 percent for comparable States from

the previous year. The average yield was 503 cwt per acre, down 68 cwt for comparable States from the previous year. Of
the total utilized production, 17.5 million cwt were for the fresh market and 4.97 million cwt were for processing. The
value of the crop totaled $2.53 billion, up 7 percent for comparable States from the previous season, with an average
annual price of $112.00 per cwt.
California’s growing season started slow due to rain in January and February. Some acres were abandoned as pickers were
unable to get in the field. Strawberry shipments were unable to catch up with the previous year due to the first two
month’s impact on the overall crop.
Beginning in 2019, strawberry estimates were discontinued in New York, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington.
Tree Nuts Comments
Almond: Utilized production on a shelled basis in California for 2019 was estimated at 2.51 billion pounds, up 12 percent
from 2018. Bearing acreage was estimated at 1.18 million, up 8 percent from the previous year. The average yield was
2,160 pounds per acre, up 70 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $6.09 billion, up 9 percent from
the previous season, with an average annual price of $2.43 per pound.
In California, cool temperatures and rain during the bloom hindered pollination, but an extended bloom period
compensated for these disruptions. Northern districts experienced much lower yields and smaller nut sets than the rest of
the State. Overall the average yield was up from 2018, but the increase in production was driven by record bearing
acreage.
Hazelnuts: Utilized production in Oregon for 2019 totaled 44,000 tons, down 14 percent from 2018. Bearing acreage was
estimated at 50,000, up 14 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 0.88 tons per acre, down 0.28 tons from
the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $84.5 million, down 8 percent from the previous season, with an average
annual price of $1,920 per ton.
In Oregon, the growing season was reported as normal with good moisture and low number of days of extreme heat
during summer. Older varieties continued to be negatively impacted by Eastern Fiber Blight, while recent plantings of
more resistant varieties mature and come into production. Pollination was within the normal range and growers reported
limited issues during harvest.
Macadamia: Utilized production in Hawaii for 2019 totaled 40.7 million pounds, up 15 percent from the previous year.
Bearing acreage was estimated at 16,900, unchanged from the previous year. The average yield was
2,410 pounds per acre, up 320 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $48.8 million, up 16 percent
from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1.20 per pound.
Growing conditions in Hawaii are still being adversely impacted by the effects of the 2018 volcano eruption. Other
producing areas have reported good growing conditions, which have improved the overall yield.
Pecan: Utilized production in 2019 totaled 256 million pounds, up 11 percent from comparable States in 2018. Bearing
acreage was estimated at 395,000, up 3 percent from comparable States in the previous year. The average yield per acre
was 647 pounds per acre, up 49 pounds from comparable States in the previous year. Of the total utilized production,
220 million pounds were sold shelled and 35.6 million pounds were sold in shell. The value of the crop totaled
$471 million, up 16 percent from comparable States in the previous season, with an average annual price of
$1.84 per pound.
In New Mexico both hail and an early frost damaged some of the crop. In Georgia, many growers were still feeling the
effects of last year's devastating Hurricane Michael on their orchards. The hot dry weather during late August, September
and October negatively impacted the nut filling stage and decreased yield potential. Many nuts on the trees did not
develop, which became more apparent during harvest. In Oklahoma, the harvest was delayed due to heavy rains in early
May, which caused flooding in some areas. Producers were faced with a wet harvest and an early frost. Despite the bad
conditions, reported average yield was over the previous season. In Texas, the wet spring in East Texas and high winds in

West Texas caused some damage to the crop. The dry, hot summer did not affect the size of the nuts, but did affect the
quality. In Arizona, frost damaged the crop in some groves. However, other farmers still reported excellent yields.
Beginning in 2019, Pecan estimates were discontinued in Alabama, California, and Louisiana.
Pistachio: Utilized production in California for 2019 totaled 740 million pounds, down 25 percent from the previous
year’s record high production. Bearing acreage was estimated at 289,000, up 9 percent from the previous year. The
average yield was 2,560 pounds per acre, down 1,180 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production,
576 million pounds were sold in shell and 164 million pounds were sold shelled. The value of the crop totaled
$1.94 billion, down 26 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $2.62 per pound.
California pistachios are an alternate bearing crop and 2019 was an “off” year. The off year decline in production was
slightly offset by increasing acreage with generally favorable cool spring weather and sufficient winter chill. The crop
quality was good with limited insect damage and large nut size.
Walnut: Utilized production in California for 2019 totaled 653,000 tons, down 4 percent from the previous year’s revised
estimate. Bearing acreage was estimated at 365,000, up 4 percent from the previous year. The average yield was
1.79 tons per acre, down 0.15 ton from the previous season’s revised estimate. Of the total utilized production,
468,000 tons were sold shelled and 185,000 tons were sold in-shell. The value of the crop totaled $1.29 billion,
up 40 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1,970 per ton.
The 2019 walnut season began with record amounts of rain during the winter and spring months. Bloom was seven to ten
days later than normal. Late spring rains provided cooler conditions which increased kernel size and helped quality.
Localized weather conditions have resulted in variable crop development across the State. No significant pest or disease
problems have been reported. Growers applied sunburn preventative materials during the heat waves over the summer.
Harvest began in September.

Definition of Terms
Bearing acreage: An orchard, grove, or vineyard is considered to be of bearing age when it can normally be expected to
produce a commercially significant quantity of the crop. Bearing age is a function of many factors including variety,
rootstock, year planted, etc.
Apple crop: Apple production estimates are published only for commercial orchards, according to the laws governing
crop production reports (7 U.S.C 590a). Commercial orchards, under these laws, are defined as orchards of 100 or more
bearing trees.
Harvested not sold: Fruit of marketable quality that was picked but not sold for various reasons are included in total
production.
Total production: The quantity of utilized production plus quantities harvested but not sold.
Utilization: These estimates refer to the first utilization, not necessarily the final utilization of a crop. For example, frozen
fruit includes some fruit that may be later used for making preserves. Grade-outs for fresh market fruit which are
processed are included in the processing quantity.
Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold plus the quantities used at home or held in storage represents utilized
production.
Processing: Operations that alter the general state of the commodity, such as canning, cooking, freezing, dehydration,
milling, grinding, pasteurization, pickling, juicing, or slicing.
Fresh Market: Utilized production that is not processed is considered fresh market.
Yield per acre: Unless otherwise stated, yield per acre is based on total production.
Price and Value Definitions
Price: Prices in this report represent the Market Year Average (MYA) price. For a crop sold for both fresh market and
processing, the total crop MYA is a weighted average of the fresh and processing prices.
Prices for fresh fruit represent the average price producers receive at the point of first sale. This is commonly referred to
as the average price as sold. The exception is fresh fruit sales in California, Michigan (apples only), New York (apples
only), and Washington which are equivalent returns at packinghouse door.
Prices for fruit sold for processing are equivalent returns for fruit delivered to the processing plant door except for
cranberries, California olives, and freestone peaches, which are priced at the first delivery point.
Value: Crop value estimates in this report cover the marketing season or crop year and should not be confused with cash
receipts which are based on a calendar year.

Statistical Methodology
Survey Procedures: Probability based grower disposition surveys are used to collect acreage, yield, production, and price
data. These fruit inquiries are generally mailed surveys at the end of the growing season. Telephone follow-up of mail
survey non-response is used to ensure adequate coverage. They provide indications of the quantity used on farms, the
quantity sold directly to consumers, and production not sold or utilized.
Estimating Procedures: Information obtained from the non-citrus fruits and nuts grower surveys along with federal
administrative data is used to establish estimates of bearing acres, yield, total production, utilized production, price, and
value. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates.
Revision Policy: Final survey indications and check data for most non-citrus fruits and nuts are available prior to
submitting utilization estimates. End-of-season estimates of production are made following harvest and are subject to
revision the following year based on a thorough review of all available data.
Reliability: Survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing non-citrus fruits and/or
nuts are not included in the sample. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication,
imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be
measured directly, but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of
all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
