DESCRIPTION OF THIS SPECIFIC COLLECTION

1. Intended purpose

This is an exploratory project to examine the use of climate change health indicators by health departments and other governmental offices and examine relevant data sources utilized in climate and health adaptation plans. We aim to examine ways health departments are utilizing indicators as a tool for monitoring impacts of climate change in their jurisdiction and assessing the impact of mitigation strategies. We also aim to identify data needs and barriers and opportunities to incorporating climate and health indicators into planning.

2. Need for the collection

To our knowledge, there is no information that is currently being collected similar to this. This exploratory project is being conducted to better understand the challenges local and state jurisdictions face in determining and utilizing indicators for state or local climate and health planning and monitoring.

3. Planned use of the data

Data will be collected and used for identifying barriers and opportunities to incorporating this data into climate planning and identifying support mechanisms to mitigate challenges and cultivate opportunities.

4. Date(s) and location(s)

Data collection will begin in April 2016 and continue through June 2016. Data collection will occur remotely.

5. Collection procedures

We are proposing to conduct webinar discussions with representatives primarily from state and local government offices responsible for climate adaptation planning. We will additionally interview several academic stakeholders that active in this space. We have developed a webinar interview guide (Attachment A). The interview will cover the following topics:

• Actions of jurisdiction in climate adaptation planning,

• Presence of climate adaptation plans,

• Data sources utilized in planning and evaluation,

• Evaluation measures and indicators used,

• Factors in determining appropriate indicators,

• Analysis of data and progress,

• Barriers to utilizing indicators,

• Usability of resources,

This webinar will serve as a guide for discussion. The online webinar will allow participants to participate remotely. The Lewin Group will summarize discussion into a final report.

6. Number of collections (e.g., focus groups, surveys, sessions)

We anticipate a sample of 25 representatives representing state and local government and academia for interviews.

7. Description of respondents/participants

Respondents will be representatives from state and local health/environmental departments and academia with oversight responsibilities of climate change adaptation planning or research in this field.

8. Description of how results will be used

Results will be used to determine what tools/data would be useful in supporting use of indicators in climate change and health adaptation planning and monitoring.

9. Description of how results will or will not be disseminated and why or why not

ASPE will share the results with the participants and the Climate Change and Health Work Group.
