Commercial motor vehicle drivers who
are subject to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations must
meet certain medical requirements. This revision is due to a final
rule entitled, "Medical Examiner's Certification Integration,"
which would require medical examiners who conduct medical
examinations for interstate commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers
to complete certain training concerning Federal Motor Carrier
Safety Administration (FMCSA) physical qualifications standards,
pass a certification test and maintain competence through periodic
retraining and retesting.

This program change increase of
503,000 estimated annual burden hours (2,633,702 proposed estimated
annual burden hours - 2,130,702 approved estimated annual burden
hours) is due to a final rule entitled, "Medical Examiner's
Certification Integration." The final rule require certified
medical examiners (MEs) performing physical examiners of commercial
motor vehicles (CMV) drivers to use a newly developed Medical
Examination Report (MER) Form MCSA-5875, in place of the current
MER Form and to use Form MCSA-5876 for the Medical Examiner's
Certificate (MEC); and report results of all CMV drivers' physical
examinations performed (including the results of examinations where
the driver was found not to be qualified) to FMCSA by midnight
(local time) of the next calendar day following the
examination.
