SSA is adjusting the rate at which we
charge participating business and other private sector entities to
verify Social Security number (SSN) holder identity requests. We
are also revising our estimates on the number of annual SSN
requests received per year; this action will increase the public
reporting burden. SSA developed CBSV in response to multiple
requests from the business community. CBSV is a fee-for-service
process which allows SSA to process high volumes of SSN
verifications that companies need for business purposes. Since this
is not required by law but is being provided as a service,
businesses will incur the costs of CBSV. The respondents are
companies requesting SSN verifications from SSA as part of their
business process.

SSA annually evaluates our
operating costs and forecasted volume to determine the transaction
rate for the use of the CBSV service. With expected growth in FY
2014, we anticipate the volume of transactions will increase. This
activity will increase the public burden by 64,307 hours and
increase the cost to respondents by $1,464,085 (increased costs
borne collectively by the 115 projected businesses enrolled in
using the CBSV service).
