DRAFT
Version 1

Form Approved
OMB Number 0925-0046
Exp. Date: 5/31/2016
Introduction: The following short survey will attempt to capture the opinions of reviewers,
who have just reviewed applications containing the modified biosketch. For most reviewers,
opinions will be based on a historical comparison to the current NIH biosketch.
Background: The current NIH biosketch, which is submitted with all competing NIH grant
applications and most progress reports by key personnel, includes the following sections:
identification, education and training, personal statement, positions and honors, selected
peer‐reviewed publications, patent citations and optional short narrative, and research
support. The current format emphasizes the value of publications and the prestige of the
journals in which those publications appeared. It doesn’t, however, provide information on
the scientific contributions of specific individuals other than providing a listing of publications
or grants awarded. Also, the list of publications and grants provides little information on the
long‐term impact of specific discoveries.
The modified biosketch has been designed to move evaluation of past performance away
from a simple consideration of the prestige of specific journals or the position of a particular
name in a list of authors. The primary focus will be on the magnitude and significance of
advances that resulted from a scientist’s work and the particular role that researcher played
in those discoveries. It will allow researchers to provide an account of their own work to allow
reviewers and program officials to better assess their contributions and capabilities. Several
external organizations like the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Wellcome Trust
include such descriptions.

Survey for Reviewers
Note to Respondents: The information you provide in this survey will remain
anonymous. No individual respondents will be identified, and all responses will be
summarized and reported in aggregate form.
Public reporting burden for this collection of information is estimated to average 15
minutes per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing
data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and
reviewing the collection of information. An agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a
person is not required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a
currently valid OMB control number.
Send comments regarding this burden estimate or any other aspect of this collection
of information, including suggestions for reducing this burden, to: NIH, Project
Clearance Branch, 6705 Rockledge Drive, MSC 7974, Bethesda, MD 20892‐7974, ATTN:
PRA (0925‐0046). Do not return the completed form to this address.

Note: Mouseovers will be programmed to define each of the grant activities in the table as follows:
NIH Research Project Grant Programs are used to support discrete, specified, circumscribed research projects and are NIH’s most commonly used programs
The AREA program supports small‐scale research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences conducted by faculty and students at educational
institutions that have not been major recipients of NIH research grant funds. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/area.htm
Center grants are awarded to institutions to support long‐term, multi‐disciplinary programs of research and development.
Small Business program is designed to support small business concerns conducting innovative research/research & development with potential for
commercialization.
A fellowship is a NIH training award for degree seeking candidates where the NIH specifies the individual receiving the award.
Career Awards are for candidates with a research or health–professional doctoral degree or its equivalent who wish to further develop their careers in
biomedical, behavioral and clinical research.

Modified Biographical Sketch
Survey for Reviewers
Have you previously submitted a research grant application to NIH as a
Principal Investigator (PI) for a single‐PI or multiple‐PI grant?
(Select yes or no, below)
☐ Yes
☐ No
NIH Definition of a Principal Investigator (PI): The individual(s) judged by the
applicant organization to have the appropriate level of authority and
responsibility to direct the project or program supported by the grant. The
applicant organization may designate multiple individuals as PDs/PIs [Program
Directors/Principal Investigators] who share the authority and responsibility for
leading and directing the project, intellectually and logistically. Each PD/PI is
responsible and accountable to the applicant organization, or, as appropriate,
to a collaborating organization, for the proper conduct of the project or
program including the submission of all required reports. The presence of more
than one identified PD/PI on an application or award diminishes neither the
responsibility nor the accountability of any individual PD/PI.
Note: If respondent answers “no” to this question, questions on pages 14 and 15 will be skipped.
