The Nation’s Highest Honors for Scientists, Engineers, and Innovators

NATIONAL MEDAL OF SCIENCE
The National Medal of Science is the Nation’s
highest honor for American scientists and
engineers. It is presented annually by the
President of the United States.
The National Medal of Science is awarded
to individuals deserving special recognition
by reason of outstanding contributions to
knowledge or the total impact of their work
on the current state of the chemical, physical,
biological, social or behavioral sciences;
mathematics; or engineering.
Anyone can nominate for the National
Medal of Science by submitting a short
description of the nominee’s contribution to
the field and three letters of support at
www.nsf.gov/od/nms/medal.jsp.
Nominations are due by March 31, 2011.

NATIONAL MEDAL OF TECHNOLOGY
AND INNOVATION
The National Medal of Technology
and Innovation is the highest honor for
technological achievement and innovation. It
is presented annually by the President of the
United States.
The Medal is awarded to individuals, teams (up
to four individuals), companies or divisions of
companies for their outstanding contributions
to the Nation’s economic, environmental and
social well-being through the development
and commercialization of technological
products, processes and concepts; technological
innovation; and strengthening the Nation’s
technological workforce.
Anyone can nominate for the National Medal of
Technology and Innovation by submitting the
nomination form and six letters of support at
www.uspto.gov/about/nmti/guidelines.jsp.
Nominations are due by March 31, 2011.

National Medal of Science

The Committee has established the following guidelines for selection of
candidates.

Principal criterion: the total impact of an individual's work on the current state of
chemical, physical, biological, social or behavioral sciences, mathematics, or
engineering.
Achievements of an unusually significant nature in relation to the potential effects
on the development of scientific thought.
Unusually distinguished service in the general advancement of science and
engineering, especially when accompanied by substantial contributions to the
content of science. Recognition by peers within the scientific community.
Contributions to innovation and industry.
Influence on education through publications, teaching activities, outreach,
mentoring, etc.
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has applied for citizenship.

Nomination package must include a nomination (entered through the FastLane
system) and three letters of reference. Nominations with fewer than three letters
of reference will not be considered by the committee.
Letters of reference may be submitted electronically through the FastLane
website. Letters may also be sent by postal mail or as an e-mail attachment.
Please be aware that letters received through FastLane will receive expedited
processing. All letters of reference should be addressed to the President's
Committee on the National Medal of Science.
Nominations remain active for a period of three years after submission and are reconsidered by the committee in subsequent annual review cycles.
Institutions may submit an unlimited number of nominations.

Privacy Act and Public Burden Statements

Privacy Act Statement
The information requested on the application materials is solicited under the authority of the National
Science Foundation Act of 1950, as amended. It will be used in connection with the selection of qualified
applicants and may be disclosed to qualified reviewers and staff assistants, and to other government
agencies as part of the review process; to government contractors as necessary to complete assigned
work; and to another Federal agency, court or party in a court or Federal administrative proceeding if the
government is a party.
Notice of the decision may be given to nominators, and disclosure may be made of awardees? names,
home institutions, and field of study for public information purposes including press releases. See Systems
of Records, NSF-12, "Fellowships and Other Awards," 63 Federal Register 265 (January 5, 1998).
Submission of the information is voluntary; however, failure to provide full and complete information may
reduce the possibility of receiving an award.

Public Burden Statement
Pursuant to 5 CFR 1320.5 (b), an agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not required to
respond to an information collection unless it displays a valid OMB control umber. The OMB control number
for this collection is 3145-0035. Public reporting burden for this collection of information is estimated to
average 20 hours per response, including the time for reviewing instructions. Send comments regarding
