Frequently Asked Questions - Students

DOCTORAL STUDENT

Training and Education of Doctoral Students

What is the purpose of this study?

The Office of Research Integrity (ORI) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is interested in learning how faculty members and their students view the doctoral research training process. Faculty who have had primary responsibility for overseeing doctoral student research participated in the 2009 ORI Faculty Survey. The next phase of this research is to talk with students and faculty to hear more about doctoral education from both perspectives. For more information about ORI, visit www.ori.dhhs.gov.

Who is conducting the study?

ORI has contracted with Mathematica Policy Research, a nationally recognized policy research organization, to conduct this study. For more than 40 years, Mathematica has provided research-based information to improve policy and programs in education, health, and employment. For more information about Mathematica, visit www.mathematica-mpr.com.

How was I selected?

Your name and contact information was provided by the faculty member you worked with during your doctoral program.

What will I be asked to do?

A member of the Mathematica research team will conduct an interview with you at a time and location of your convenience. The interview will cover topics related to your doctoral training and education.

How long will it take?

The interview will last about 1½ to 2 hours.

What are the benefits to participating?

You will receive $50 upon completion of the interview. Information about how faculty and students view the doctoral training and education process and information about current practices and policies will inform a discussion of best practices.

Will the information be protected??

All data will be protected following strict procedures and shared only with the research team. Individual names will not be reported. A summary will describe the key themes indentified in the interviews.

What if I have questions?
