GLS Campus Case Study Questions & Answers

October 5, 2009

  1. On Part B of the Supporting Statement, pg 19, multiple “waves” of data collection are mentioned – What are these waves? (“In addition, within each grantee site, group sample sizes of 200 independent respondents at each wave achieve 80% power…”)

Response

The SPEAKS is conducted annually as part of the original Campus Cross-site Evaluation. Using a cross-sectional design, the SPEAKS is administered multiple times on each campus. We refer to these as “waves” of data collection. For example, wave 1 was the first administration of the SPEAKS in Fall 2007. Wave 2, the second administration of the SPEAKS, occurred in Spring 2008.

For the case studies, we intend to administer the SPEAKS with the Enhanced Module only one time. However, this administration was planned to occur at the same time as a regular administration or wave of the SPEAKS for the cross-site evaluation.

  1. Please include the OMB number of the ongoing cross-site evaluation, as well as a brief note clarifying how this study fits in with the larger program in the Supporting Statement.

Response

The OMB clearance number for the ongoing GLS Cross-site Evaluation is 0930-0286 with an expiration date of May 2010.

The campus case studies are designed to examine, in depth, prevention activities on two campuses that have successfully implemented a GLS Suicide Prevention program. The case studies explore the following: (1) suicide prevention related infrastructures and supports that exist on campus, (2) the various student-level factors that are related to suicide prevention efforts (e.g., protective factors, coping strategies, social norms, and facilitators/barriers to student access and receipt of behavioral healthcare), and (3) the extent to which the campus infrastructures and supports address these factors. These case studies more closely will examine individual-level factors that are not currently assessed by the cross-site evaluation.

  1. Please also describe the lottery procedures that are already in place for the incentives (e.g. what amount of money is used, how many people get this amount, how selection is done, etc.) Also, to clarify, respondents of this study will be given nothing additional than what they would have gotten for reporting on the GLS Cross-site Evaluation SPEAKS?

Response

Each campus participating in the SPEAKS as part of the cross-site evaluation of the campus case studies is allotted $1000 for student incentives. This amount is consistent across the cross-site evaluation and the campus case studies; thus, there is no difference in the amount of incentive for case study sites.

  1. On response rates:

  1. What have the response rates been for SPEAKS or similar studies in the past?

Response

To date, response rates for the SPEAKS – Student Version have averaged approximately 12% to 16%.

  1. What is the expected response rate for this study?

Response

Because we intend to work closely with each campus to increase response rates by proven methods, we anticipate a response rate of 20-30%.

  1. What procedures are in place to analyze non-response bias?

Response

It is important to assess whether SPEAKS respondents are collectively representative of their campus’ general population and to identify if certain elements of the population are disproportionately represented. Each campus provides us with demographic proportions of the campus as well as the samples across gender, race, class level (students), and employee type (faculty/staff). Utilizing these demographic data, nonresponse analysis is conducted to determine if the two populations (respondents vs. nonrespondents) differ significantly across demographic characteristics.

  1. Please delete the text “up to six” on pgs 1, 4, and 10 of the Supporting Statement, as only 2 sites are being studied.

Response

This change should be made in the draft currently being amended for submission to SAMHSA.
