National Children’s Study Duplin County
Focus Groups For Selected Latino/a/ Communities
Why are we interested in doing focus groups?
The purpose of these focus groups is to help us understand whether small groups are the best way to introduce the National Children’s Study to the Latino community in Duplin County.
What is a focus group?
A focus group is a small group of people who meet together with a moderator who leads a discussion about a specific topic.
Who do we want to participate in these focus groups?
Men and women age 18 or older from Mexico and Central America who are new immigrants to the United States and live in Duplin County. Some groups will include grandparents, while others will include parents, and potential parents. Separate groups will be held for men and women and for residents from Central America and Mexico.
When will these focus groups be conducted? What kinds of questions will be asked?
Focus groups will be conducted during November and December of 2008. The moderator will ask questions such as: “Would a Latino resident be likely to attend a supper meeting about the National Children’s Study?” and “How can we make it easy and convenient for you and your friends to attend a meeting?”
Where will these focus groups be held?
Focus groups will be held in local churches, meeting halls, or business establishments in Duplin County and will be hosted by a trusted member of the community.
Who will conduct these focus groups?
Staff members from the National Children’s Study, along with professional translators will work with local community members to facilitate the group. Focus groups will be conducted in Spanish.
How will my personal identity be protected?
Participants will not be referred to by their own name during the focus group, and no personal information will be written down. The National Children’s Study will not ask for or record information about participants’ immigration status.
