DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES

Public Health Services
Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration
Rockville, MD 20857

February 2007

Dear Facility Director:
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors an annual
survey known as the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS).
N-SSATS collects data from every known substance abuse treatment facility in the country and is
the most comprehensive national source of data on alcohol and drug abuse treatment facilities.
Federal, state and local administrators use this information to help make informed decisions about
treatment program needs, which makes your participation important.
As in past years, information from this survey will also be used to update the National Directory
of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs and the on-line Substance Abuse Treatment
Facility Locator found at http://findtreatment.samhsa.gov. The on-line Locator is searchable
and has an easy-to-use mapping feature. Facilities that respond to the 2007 N-SSATS and are
designated as eligible by their State substance abuse agency will be listed in both the 2008
Directory and the on-line Locator.
This year’s survey will ask questions on the number of clients receiving various types of
substance abuse services at this facility on March 30, 2007. It will also include questions about
other facility characteristics and services offered. The survey is being conducted for SAMHSA
by Mathematica Policy Research (MPR), Princeton, NJ. In late March, you will receive a packet
from MPR with information about completing the questionnaire either on the Internet or by
filling out a paper version and returning it to MPR. I encourage you to complete the
questionnaire on the Internet, as it is the most efficient method for collecting the data.
Thank you, and we look forward to your participation in the 2007 N-SSATS.

Sincerely,

Javaid Kaiser, Ph.D.
Director, Office of Applied Studies
