Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment (SBIRT)

Thank you for helping us in our survey. We are providing you with the following information to help you understand what our survey is about and why your answers are important to us.

Most people who use drugs or alcohol are not considered clinically dependent. But even moderate users are likely to cost society through increased medical care use, increased rates of accident and injury, and lost productivity at work. Some people who are not dependent now will someday be dependent. However, little treatment is available to people who are not currently dependent.

To fill in this treatment gap, the Federal government, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), has funded an initiative to provide Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment (SBIRT) services to all levels of alcohol and drug users. SBIRT services are designed to educate nonusers, moderate users, and at-risk users about the risks associated with drinking and taking drugs; to motivate them to make appropriate substance use decisions;, and to refer high-risk users to treatment.

Currently, SBIRT services are being delivered in seven States, in emergency departments, primary care clinics, and public health clinics. To evaluate the SBIRT program, we at RTI International have been funded to conduct a survey of individuals who have received any SBIRT services. Answers to these survey questions will help us to

• know the impact of SBIRT services on people’s drinking and drug use,

• better understand which SBIRT services are most helpful for people, and

• discover better ways of delivering SBIRT services.

Your inputs on these questions are very valuable to us, and we are grateful for your willingness to help us out. Your participation in this study will help to determine how successful SBIRT has been and whether SBIRT services will be delivered in more health care settings in the future.

Public reporting burden for this collection of information is estimated to vary from 15 to 35 minutes per response, with an average of 25 minutes per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information.
