The proposed data collection is to a
medical research study of the BRCA1 gene. Recently, an unexpectedly
high frequency of a particular mutation in the BRCA1 gene was
detected in Jewish individuals. We propose to study approximately
5,000 Jewish individuals from Greater Washington by collecting a
small blood sample and a brief questionnaire that concentrates on
family history of cancer. This study will refine the estimate of
how commonly certain BRCA1 mutations occur in this population and
will estimate the risk of cancer in those who carry a mutation.
