collection request is approved subject to the following: NIH will
submit an amended justification that clearly explains how this
component of the research effort fits into the broader study,
particularly in light of the critical additional information being
collected in the parental surveys for adequately analyzing the
potential effects of low birth weight on school performance. The
amendment will also reflect the revised sample size due to the time
discrepancy between the parental and teacher survey
components.

THE U.S. HAS EXPERIENCED A DRAMATIC
INCREASE IN THE SURVIVAL OF LOW BIRTHWEIGHT INFANTS. THESES INFANTS
ARE KNOWN TO BE AT RISK FOR LESS THAN OPTIMAL NEURODEVELOPMENT
OUTCOMES. THIS STUDY INVESTIGATES THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOW
BIRTHWEIGHT CHILDREN TO IDENTIFY THE CARE AND SERVICES WHICH THEY
WILL NEED. THE TEACHER QUESTIONNAIRE WILL GATHER CRITIALLY NEEDED
DATA ON THE UTILIZATION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES BY VLBW
INFANTS AT SCHOOL AG
